Newlywed Checklist
Information brought to you by the USTaxCenter.

Oh, you thought the planning checklists ended when your marriage started? Nope! Wrapping up the loose ends from your big day and planning a future with your new partner is a venture that requires some work (and a lot of love), so use this checklist to help carry you over threshold from honeymoon heaven to newlywed bliss.

Memories

  • Journal Notable Moments; Reminisce with a journal of memories on your anniversary each year
  • Preserve Keepsakes; Have your dress professionally cleaned (Email us for more information on Wedding Dress Preservation Co.) and stored. Dry and press your wedding bouquet. Freeze the top tier of your wedding cake for your 1 year anniversary.
  • Share the Memories; Publish your wedding photos on social media for family and friends to view and relive the fun
  • Use your event hashtag when sharing photos and videos to remind loved ones to use it and check out other posts from the night!
Taxes & Finances
  • Consider Combining your Money; Discuss opening a joint checking and savings accounts to plan for your next big milestone together.
  • Get name changes on record if you or your spouse has a new married name
  • Update your withholdings based on the IRS's Withholding Calculator.
  • Decide if you will file jointly or separately for the next tax season.
  • Learn about new deductions and credits you may qualify for as a married couple
Legal
  • Make sure everyone signs your marriage license-typically both spouses, your officiant, and one or two witnesses
  • If You Change Your Name; Get copies of your marriage license, apply for a new Social Security card and upgrade your license at the DMV
  • Update Important Items
    • Financial Accounts and Cards
    • Employers and Payroll
    • Insurance and Healthcare Providers
    • Passports
    • Voter Registration
Gratitude
  • Send Thank Yous; Break down how many you have to write (E.G. write 10 per night with your spouse)
  • Return Unwanted and Duplicate Gifts; Your loved ones don't want their gift forgotten in a closet anyway
  • Write Reviews; Loved your Vendors? Send them a testimonial to use on their website or find them on review sites and leave your remark!
